New Students

New students of all levels and experience are welcome and encouraged to attend. There is no obligation to buy a membership or commit to a specific time slot. It is very important that new students arrive at least 15 minutes before class. You need to be briefed by the instructor to insure that your first class is safe and enjoyable. Do not come to class on an empty stomach as this may cause a sudden drop in blood sugar level. Don't have a full stomach. Eat just enough (or early enough) to keep your blood sugar level steady and to absorb stomach acid. Be sure to begin hydrating 2-3 hours before class. The better hydrated you are, the better you will deal with the effects of the heat.

All students should bring the following items: Sticky mat, large bath size towel, two washcloths, water or beverage of choice, and a sense of humor. Mats and beverages are available for sale and mats and towels are available for rent. Women should wear a stretch short or tight with a jog bra. Men can wear Speedos or shorts (jogging shorts are not recommended) and a Tee shirt is optional. There is a variety of yoga clothing available for sale at the studio. Remember, the temperature in the room will be approximately 105 degrees. You will sweat a lot! Please try to avoid the color green. Don't ask, just try.

There are some rules of yoga etiquette. When entering the yoga room leave your shoes and cell phone outside. You don't have to be quiet, but try to minimize the noise. Do not obstruct another students' mirror space. Be courteous and make room to accommodate others. Do not leave your valuables in the locker rooms, bring them with you into the studio. Finally, please avoid the use of fragrances to include perfume, ointments, and nicotine.

Jim Ambrogi, the Director, is a hands on teacher who will help you understand how to perform the postures the right way. If this makes you uncomfortable, please let him know and you will only receive verbal corrections.

Remember, All you have to do is try the right way.

Students under the age of 18 must have parental consent either in writing or accompanying at beginning of class.

Bikram Choudhury

Yogiraj Bikram Choudhury is the founder of the worldwide Yoga College of India. Born in Calcutta in 1946, Bikram began Yoga at the age of four with India's most-renowned physical culturist at that time, Bishnu Ghosh, the younger brother of Paramahansa Yogananda (Author of the most popular book on Yoga, The Autobiography of a Yogi, and founder of the Self-Realization Fellowship in Los Angeles).

Bikram practiced Yoga at least four to six hours every day at Ghosh's College of Physical Education in Calcutta. At the age of thirteen, he won the National India Yoga Championship. He was undefeated for the following three years and retired as the undisputed All-India National Yoga Champion.

At seventeen, an injury to his knee during a weight-lifting accident brought the prediction from leading European doctors that he would never walk again. Not accepting their pronouncement, he had himself carried back to Bishnu Ghosh's school, for he knew that if anyone could help to heal his knee, it was his teacher. Six months later, his knee had totally recovered. Ghosh was a celebrated physical culturist and the first to scientifically document Yoga's ability to cure chronic physical ailments and heal the body.

Bikram was asked by Ghosh to start several Yoga schools in India. The schools were so successful that at Bishnu's request Bikram traveled to Japan and opened two more. He has since brought his curative methods of Yoga therapy around the world.

Jim Ambrogi

Jim Ambrogi is the founder of Bikram Yoga in MD, DC, and VA, opening the first studio on Wisconsin Avenue in the District in August 2001. Jim completed the nine week training course in April, 1999 and was chosen Best in Overall. Since then he continually returns to the International Headquarters in Los Angeles to train new teachers, maintain his certification as a yoga judge, and take classes with Bikram.

Jim is a retired Army officer, Airborne Ranger, and served combat tours in Viet Nam and Desert Storm. He has a 60% disability rating from the Veterans Administration which was his motivation to try Bikram Yoga. Numerous injuries and surgeries put an end to his weight lifting and distance running. Bikram Yoga was the only activity that gave him a tremendous physical workout and healed his body at the same time.

Jim has been featured on NBC, ABC, FOX, and DC Cable TV, as well as the Washington Post, Washington Times, Washingtonian Magazine, Women’s Health and Fitness, Yoga Digest, and other various media outlets.

Jim is very adept at recognizing and diagnosing physical problems and working one on one with the students to help relieve their pain. In his class, you will get as much personal instruction as you want and be shown how to improve your Bikram Yoga practice.
